Competitiveness

Competitiveness may indicate the status of market oligopoly or what is called in the industry as the "competitiveness in bidding", "market share", and "availability of jobs with different sizes to allow different size companies to bid with acceptable profit margins". Competitiveness can be gauged through the market share and concentration and quantified by the distribution of revenues among the companies. This is observed through the list of top 400 contractors in the U.S., released every year by Engineering News Record (ENR), as one can explore the distribution of companies in terms of market share (based on annual revenue). The diversity of revenues is gauged through the Gini-Simpson Index of Total Revenue of top 400 contractors, which was also suggested by Hirschman (1945) and Herfindahl (1950) as the Hirschman-Herfindahl Index (HHI).
