The Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) from US Department of Labor releases Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) . One of the released data is total number of hiring and layoff for different industries. Hires include all additions to the payroll during the month such as newly hired and rehired employees, permanent, short-term, and seasonal employees, part-time employments, and transfers from other locations. It excludes transfers or promotions within the sampled establishment or subcontractors. JOLTS also releases data on total number of separations as all employees separated from the payroll during the calendar month; including layoffs, quits, terminations of seasonal employees, retirements, transfers to other locations or deaths. The graph below shows the trend of construction employment, normalized based on the reference point of December 2013. This trend is based on the ratio of hiring to separations for construction industry normalized by the national rates.
